Target Oregon: Little Known Stories of WWII

Saturday, May 11, 2024 - 2:00pm

Join Storyteller Alton Takiyama-Chung at the Tillamook Main Library on May 11th, top of flyer.

Join us at the Tillamook Main Library on Saturday, May 11th at 2:00pm to hear fantastic tales from Alton Takiyama-Chung!

It is not well known that Oregon was attacked by the Japanese in WWII. In collaboration with and based upon the work of independent filmmaker, Ilana Sol (On Paper Wings and Samurai in the Oregon Sky), storyteller Alton Takiyama-Chung will tell the stories of the paper balloons armed with bombs sent across the Pacific to attack the US towards the end of WWII and how Oregon was bombed by a Japanese plane. Years later, in acts of reconciliation, some of the women who helped make the balloons, and the Japanese pilot, visit Oregon. Alton will also tell the story of the bulger onboard the USS West Virgina, a battleship in Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, and how he reconciles with a Japanese pilot who took part in that raid.

Please join us for these stories of remembrance and redemption.
