"Billionaire Elliott Kantor, who ruled over a mammoth real estate portfolio in Chicago, was a creature of habit. His trainer came to his house three mornings every week for a five-thirty workout. By six-thirty he was in the car and his driver drove him down into the city where he'd get a shave and trim from his barber every morning, then head over to his offices on Wacker. He always ate breakfast at his desk, had two young assistants who tended to his every whim and demand, then spent all day in and out of meetings growing a business that had already made him one of the wealthiest men in the country. There were few surprises in his world. Or so everyone thought, until Kantor died in his sleep at age 77, leaving behind a vast fortune and grieving wife, son, and five grandchildren. When Simon Kantor enlists Ashe Cayne to explore his father's death, the probing private investigator learns there was plenty of "activities" Elliott participated in after hours, including a sex traffic ring. And as Ashe and readers will discover this is only the beginning, and as our hero dives deeper and deeper into Elliott's hidden world, this may be the end for the intrepid Mr. Cayne"--Provided by publisher.

"Rocks are the record of our creative planet reinventing itself for four billion years. Nothing is ever lost, just transformed. Marcia Bjornerud's life as a geologist has coincided with an extraordinary period of discovery. From an insular girlhood in rural Wisconsin, she found her way to an unlikely career studying mountains in remote parts of the world. As one of few women in her field, she witnessed the shift in our understanding of the Earth, from solid object to an entity in a constant state of transformation. In the most tumultuous times of her own life, a deep understanding of our rocky planet imbued her life with meaning. The lives of rocks are long and complex, spanning billions of years and yet shaping our own human lives in powerful, invisible ways. Sandstone that filters out pathogens creating underground oases in aquifers of clean water. Ecologite is "the chosen rock" whose formation keeps the planet running. Earth is not just a passive backdrop, or a source of resources to be mined, extracted, and carved out. Rocks are full of wisdom, but somewhere along the way many of us have forgotten how to hear it. When we are uncertain about where to find truth, a geocentric worldview reminds us that we are Earthlings, part of a planetary community where we can find wisdom in the most unlikely places"-- Provided by publisher.

"Shalinee Sharma is one of the world's top experts on math learning, but when she was in school, she sat in the back row, unsure if she could ever master the subject. Many of us buy into the idea that some people are innately good at math and others just won't ever succeed at it-but it's not true. Sharma shows how complex problem solving and puzzle solving, abstract and logical thinking, and cultivating a growth mindset are crucial skills for success that can be taught to everyone, and how math, far from being a dry, dull exercise, shares common ground with art, creativity, and wonder. She also explodes the myths that hold us back from enjoying math, with chapters dedicated to the three roadblocks that hold both kids and adults back and discourage them from learning. With instructive line drawings throughout, Sharma explains the math instinct that all humans have from birth, and better, more intuitive ways to solve math problems. Whether you are an educator, a parent, or an adult who has always thought you're "bad at math" but wants to get good, Math Sense contains the guidance, takeaways, and specific approaches you need to learn to love numbers"-- Provided by publisher.
This harrowing tale of early twentieth century New York reveals the true stories of an immigrant underworld, a secret vice squad, and the rise of organized crime. In the early 1900s, prior to World War I, New York City was a vortex of vice and corruption. On the Lower East Side, then the most crowded ghetto on earth, Eastern European Jews formed a dense web of crime syndicates. Gangs of horse poisoners and casino owners, pimps and prostitutes, thieves and thugs, jockeyed for dominance while their family members and neighbors toiled in the unregulated garment industry. But when the notorious murder of a gambler attracted global attention, a coterie of affluent German-Jewish uptowners decided to take matters into their own hands. Worried about the anti-immigration lobby and the uncertain future of Jewish Americans, the uptowners marshalled a strictly off-the-books vice squad led by an ambitious young reformer. The squad, known as the Incorruptibles, took the fight to the heart of crime in the city, waging war on the sin they saw as threatening the future of their community. Their efforts, however, led to unforeseen consequences in the form of a new mobster class who realized, in the country's burgeoning reform efforts, unprecedented opportunities to amass power. In this mesmerizing and atmospheric account, drawn from never-before-seen sources and peopled with unforgettable characters, Dan Slater tells an epic and often brutal saga of crime and redemption, exhuming a buried history that shaped our modern world.

"In Never Saw Me Coming, Tanya Smith shares her deeply personal and remarkable story of how she went from a precocious young girl to a money-grabbing, computer-savvy wiz. It starts out as a keen interest in technology and innocently acquiring phone numbers to Michael Jackson, as well as other celebrities, and moves to her successfully stealing and depositing $5,000 into her grandmother's banking account. By the time she is 18, the risk taker has confiscated millions in cash. The FBI is hot on her tail and hauls her in for an interview, demanding Smith let them know who she's working for, "as these are not the kind of crimes Black people are smart enough to commit." Their words, indicating that intelligence was determined by race, severely offended Smith. Up for the challenge, she proves the FBI wrong and over time steals $40 million dollars, while securing diamonds, gold bars, and other commodities. Her lifestyle attracts the wrong kind of people, even those who set out to kill her. Law enforcement persisted, ultimately dubbing Smith "one of the single biggest threats to the entire United States banking system." She receives an outrageous prison sentence--the longest for a white-collar offense--and is eventually released by mounting her own brilliant defense."--Amazon.
This is not your typical weight loss book. Weight loss books have historically been rife with misinformation. A conveyor belt of diet books pretending to have the latest revolutionary weight loss "hacks", trying to grab your attention with whatever weight loss diet is trending. What is the best diet for you? Is it the ketogenic diet? Is it intermittent fasting? Is it the 5:2 diet? Is it a low-carb diet, a low-fat diet, or one of the many rapid weight loss plans promising that you can all lose an astronomical amount of weight in a short space of time? Do you know what doesn't make sense? Telling everyone to follow the same weight loss diet, period. Diets are not one size fits all. We are all different, and a diet plan that your friend is successful with might be a diet plan that doesn't work for you. There is no 'best' weight loss diet for everyone. We are all individuals with different biology, preferences, and circumstances. Here are some cold, hard facts: - It is estimated that half of all adults are attempting to lose weight at least once per year. - Losing fat is the most sought-after goal in the fitness industry. - Despite the prevalence of diet attempts, global body weights have been trending upward for the last 50 years. - Most people who start a weight loss diet only get short-term results and are not successful at keeping that weight off in the long run. - Many of you feel confused by the huge amount of conflicting weight loss information and feel fed up with hopping from one diet to the next, constantly losing and regaining the same amount of weight. Rather than pretending to have the universal solution for everyone, Everything Fat Loss comprehensively explains and summarises what the research actually says about every major fat loss topic to help you formulate a plan that works for you. No gimmicks. No overhyped marketing. No cookie-cutter diet plans. No false promises. This is the ultimate scientific resource on fat loss, written to cut through the BS.

In 1913, José Guadalupe Posada, a genius Mexican draftsman and lithographer, died in oblivion. A century later, he is recognized as an artist of international stature. His animated skeletons are now anchored in the collective imagination; we thus recognize at first sight the Catrina, a female skeleton wearing a luxurious hat, which has become an emblematic figure of Mexico. However, they represent only a tiny part of its production. This monograph brings together many reproductions of images. Posada's work is thus placed in the political and social context of Mexico at the turn of the twentieth century, but also in his artistic and personal career. "It is known that in Posada's workshop there was a copy of "The Last Judgment", by Michelangelo; a detail that perhaps indicates the size of his ambition. Also, the fact that he signed most of his engravings tells us that he was aware of their value. Wondering if he was an artist or a craftsman, because he worked all his life on commission, is absolutely inconsequential. The turn that his career took when he met the editor Vanegas Arroyo was extraordinary: after a virtuous start to his career, but that in no way anticipates his desire to subvert the established order, or the masterpieces followed. He, who had produced conventional lithographs, became a master of printmaking, the inventor of a new and avant-garde style, between 1889 and 1891, in less than two years! Posada got rid of unnecessary embellishments, removed details and fioriture, reinvented framing, and infused his characters with tremendous inner tension. Something never seen before. This is not an artist who was looking for inspiration in front of the blank sheet, but a draftsman who responded quickly to daily requests, creating one of the most spectacular works in the world during the turn of the century. How did he do it? This question cannot go unanswered: it would have been impossible for Posada to become the genius of engraving in tasteful publications, but as conformist as many of the newspapers of the time, in which he also collaborated. The role played by his editor and accomplice Antonio Vanegas Arroyo was central." (HKB Translation) -- Page [17].

"The best stories are the ones we didn't know needed to be told The small, rundown village of Great Diddling is full of stories--author Berit Gardner can feel it. The way the villagers avoid outsiders, the furtive stares and whispers in the presence of newcomers... Berit can sense the edge of a story waiting to be unraveled, and she's just the person to do it. In fact, with a book deadline looming over her and no manuscript (not even the idea for a manuscript, truth be told), Berit doesn't just want this story. She needs it. Then, while attending a village tea party, Berit becomes part of the action herself. An explosion in the library of the village's grand manor kills a local man, and the resulting investigation and influx of outsiders sends the quiet, rundown community into chaos. "Always apprehensive about working fire scenes, Tempe is called to Washington, DC, to analyze the victims of a deadly blaze and sees her misgivings justified. The devastated building is in Foggy Bottom, a neighborhood with a colorful past and present, and Tempe becomes suspicious about the property's ownership when she delves into its history. The pieces start falling into place strangely and quickly, and, sensing a good story, Tempe teams with a new ally, telejournalist Ivy Doyle. Soon the duo learns that back in the thirties and forties the home was the hangout of a group of bootleggers and racketeers known as the Foggy Bottom Gang. Though interesting, this fact seems irrelevant--until the son of a Foggy Bottom gang member is shot dead at his home in an affluent part of the district. Coincidence? Targeted attacks? So many questions. As Tempe and Ivy dig deeper, an arrest is finally made. Then another Foggy Bottom Gang-linked property burns to the ground, claiming one more victim. Slowly, Tempe's instincts begin pointing to the obvious: somehow, her moves since coming to Washington have been anticipated, and every path forward seems to bring with it a lethal threat"-- Provided by publisher.
